Hierarchy map

The Hierarchy map answers “how does this ladder up?”. It draws your Items as cards on a canvas, organized into horizontal bands by Type and connected by lines from each parent to its children. Use it when the conversation is about structure—coverage, gaps, what rolls up into what. When the conversation is about timing instead, use the Roadmap.

Reading the Hierarchy map#

The canvas is read top to bottom. Each Type in your hierarchy gets its own horizontal band, with the highest Type at the top. Cards sit inside their band, and lines connect each parent to the children it owns in the band below.

  1. Type band — one horizontal strip per Type, labeled on the left. Strategies sit above Objectives, Objectives above their Key Results, and so on down your hierarchy.
  2. Time cluster — within a band, cards are grouped into boxes by their planning window, such as 2026 or H1 2026, so Items that share a timeframe sit together.
  3. Card — one card per Item. The next section covers what it shows.
  4. Connector — a line from a parent card down to each of its children, so you can trace a branch from top to bottom.

What a card shows#

A card carries the same Item summary you see elsewhere, sized to fit the canvas. Read it without opening the Item:

  • Identity — the Type icon, the Item’s key (such as S-1), and its name.
  • Progress — the Item’s value against its target, as a bar and a percentage.
  • Status — the current Status, such as Off Track, colored by its category.
  • Owner — the avatar of the single person accountable for the Item.
  • Children — a footer that expands the card to reveal its nested Items, with a count of how many it has.

Working with the canvas#

The map is a canvas, so you move around it rather than scroll a page. Drag an empty area to pan. The controls at the bottom right zoom in and out, and Fit all frames the whole map in view. Expand a card’s children to walk down a branch in place.

The toolbar scopes the map the same way it scopes the other views. The Period selector limits the map to one planning Period. The search box finds an Item by name or key, and Filter narrows by Status, Type, Owner, Teams, Labels, or Parent. To open an Item, click its key or name on the card—its Item details view opens over the map.

  • Portfolio board — health at a glance for each top-level Item and its branch.
